Vignesh Melwani

Artist – Educator – ‘Cultural agitator’

Vignesh Melwani (Barcelona, 1995) is a interdisciplinary artist who mainly uses the singing voice, along with the piano, composition, dance, acting and words.

He has published ‘Improvisuals’ (2023), an experimental, minimalist and indoeuropean album that’s been presented at venues such as the Furiasia Festival (CCCB), the BAM Festival (Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm) or the Asia-Europe Cultural Festival (BOZAR, in Brussels). Singer of the duo he has had since 2019 with the guitarist Carla Motis, he has also collaborated on different stage, audiovisual and recording projects (Chaitanya Natu, Oriol Borràs, Mohammed Bitari…).

He has worked in different music schools as a teacher of singing, piano, harmony, ear training and choral singing, as well as different communitary artistic projects such as the Barcelona Coral Asia, with a special focus on making music accessible and for everyone, according to the prisms of intersectionality.

Under the concept of ‘cultural agitator’ lie his facets as a researcher, disseminator, mediator and cultural manager, addressing cultural sociology and accessibility, South Asian culture, musicology and the axes of cultural diversity, gender and social class, having collaborated with entities such as Espai Avinyó.

Recently he became a board member of the Catalan Music Academy’s governing board & academic council.

Graduated in two majors: the Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities (Universitat Pompeu Fabra) & the Bachelor’s Degree of Music in Modern & Jazz Vocals (Conservatori del Liceu). Additionally he’s also completed the Postgraduate Degree in Performing Arts and Social Action (Institut del Teatre-ESMUC-Xamfrà) and a Hindustani Vocals course in A.R. Rahman’s college (KM Music Conservatory).
